Urinary incontinence is a common issue that often increases with age, but a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine suggests that regular yoga practice may help manage this condition. The research indicates that yoga is accessible to most individuals, potentially making treatment for urinary incontinence more inclusive.
The study involved two 12-week exercise programs with 121 women in one group practicing yoga and 119 women in the control group participating in physical conditioning. The yoga group focused on poses to strengthen the pelvic floor, while the control group performed general stretching and strengthening exercises. Both groups experienced significant reductions in incontinence episodes, with the yoga group showing a 65 percent decrease, comparable to the effects of medication.
Alison Huang, MD, the lead study author, explains that urinary incontinence can stem from various factors, including pelvic floor weakness, overall physical conditioning decline, and psychological stress. Yoga may address these factors, offering a holistic approach to bladder control.
Ashley Rawlins, PT, DPT, a pelvic floor physical therapist, supports the study's findings, noting that yoga enhances pelvic floor health by strengthening and flexibly coordinating the pelvic floor muscles. She also emphasizes the low-impact nature of yoga, making it a safe and accessible exercise option.
G. Thomas Ruiz, MD, recommends considering yoga as a complementary therapy for urinary incontinence, alongside maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding constipation, and performing pelvic floor exercises like kegels. In severe cases, medical treatments, Botox injections, and surgery may be considered.
For those with urinary incontinence, Huang advises reviewing medications that could exacerbate bladder issues and reducing caffeine intake, which can increase the urge to urinate. Consulting a doctor for tailored treatment options, including referrals to specialists, is recommended for effective management of urinary incontinence.
